theres a little clip on the back of the speedo housing that holds the cable in place, if you can get your hands back there and feel around you can do it that way.
If your car has A/C you will probably need to remove the plastic duct that runs under the left dash. It's pretty crowded under the dash but you should be able to reach up there. Here's a photo of the back of a 76 speedo. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/atta...47589105&stc=1
Once you can get your hand to the back of the speedo just push on the clip and the cable drops out. Then just pull the intercable out of the housing.

I've got the plastic duct out but can't figure out the clip holding the cable. Will try again this afternoon.
Your in luck! I just did this a couple of weeks ago. I ended up removing just about everything under the column, the ductwork previously mentioned included. I also took the two column mounting bolts loose to give a little more room. You can get it from there but it is still very tight and a few words were expressed but it came off. It's not the easiest angle to work at either you'll be on your back and upside down. Best of luck.
If I remember right you have to push the clip toward the speedo

Reason: saw you got that far already
When I took mine out I was removing the dash so the lower dash panel was loose. All I did was press the lower end of the clip toward the speedo (I think) and it came out. Since the panel was loose it was putting a little tension on the cable. With the panel in place you may need to get your other hand in there and pull back on the cable while you release the clip. Good luck.
Just to help refresh some memories, the clip does have to be pushed toward the speedometer.
Just did mine today, push the clip toward the dash, and it pops right off!!!
I keep saying, I learn alot from folks here!!!!
