I am currently rebuilding my L82. So far I am having the block bored .030, decked, line honed.. all the normal stuff. Plan on using Edelbrock Performer RPM heads (170cc runners, 2.02's and 64cc). Compression ratio should end up around 9.7:1 I believe. I am undecided on 2 things.
1. Fuel injection or N/A. Have been looking at Edelbrocks MPI systems, pricey as hell. Can save a few bucks going N/A. Is there any big benifit between FI and N/A?

2. Cam. Not too familiar with cam sizing, any help here welcome.

My desire is to "wake up" the engine and still have a very streetable ride. What are your thoughts?

With 9.7 compression, I would select the XE262H-10 from comp cams. Part# 12-238-2. I'm interested to see what others would recommend. You may even get by on 89 octane with that cam, and not require premium fuel.

What's your budget?
If there isn't a limit, I'd suggest going with a roller cam and fuel injection. Both are used in modern engines with great results.
Do you have an automatic or a manual? That can make a big difference when picking a cam. Also need to know rear end ratio and what you'll be doing with the car.

Basically, we need more info.

I have the Comp XE262 cam in my engine. Although it is a 383, that cam acts very mild in normal driving. Lots of low rpm power.

No real budget, would like to limit the total dollar amount as much as possable without sacrificing quality parts

Auto tranny, th350. Was also thinking about upgrade to a unit with an OD, perhaps a 4L60. Rear end ratio should be 3:55 but dont quate me on that.

A hydraulic roller with about 280 degrees duration (220 @ '050" lift) and whatever lift the heads will allow. A set of headers and a well tuned Quadrajet.

With sharply tuned cruise metering this setup will rival FI in economy, better it in power and you won't have all that fuel curve crap. On top of all that you won't have to buy a $200 fuel pump and hook it up.

Just a lot simpler.

Default FI or Carb

Besides the port injection systems, look at the Holley TBI unit. We have found it easy to work with and tune and very reliable once you have it dialed in. We have it on a 383 daily driver and it makes the Corvette a very nice driver. Fuel mileage will not be quite as good as port injection, but for lower initial cost and the simplicity it offers, it might be a viable choice. I personally prefer port injection, but I have been rather impressed with the TBI unit after 4 or 5 thousand miles.
