Default lock up or not

im about to go for the converter and the locals here seem to all agree that the additional 2-300 rpm drop on the highway over 4th gear (700 r4) isnt worth the problems/expense/hook up costs and additonal exposure to future breakage of the lock up feature. i like the idea of lower r's on the highway but it seems more predictable to not use lock up. id appreciate guidance.

Art Carr is a pioneer in building OD tranmissions for the performance market says no to the lock up converter. I took his advice and didn't have problems with mine.

Check out what these guys have to say about it. Lots of performance cars come from the factory with lockup working..

The typical advise is that your transmission will run hotter without lockup for obvious reasons. However, I'm confident that running without lockup will not damage anything so long as you have a trans cooler that will keep the operating temperature from becoming excessive.

Default Lock up

I have a 700r4 in my 69 convert. I use the lock up feature on the highway. Mine is wired to a switch in the cockpit and thru the brake light switch. I can disable it when cruising at slower speeds if I want. As far as running hotter, I will know more when summer gets here to FL.

As long as the transmission stays cool it's not a big deal, but it's a nice feature to use, still. TH-350s ran forever without them.

Too much power and hitting the throttle hard after lock-up could result in some costly effects.

Do you guys have any opinion about hydraulic lock up? I was looking at Maddog trans. site on ebay last week and he said he could set up a hydraulic lock up with no wiring required. Ever heard of this?

hey Mike ever change that shift detent??? i agree with MikeR if you have a trans cooler it will probalby never be an issue.....whats your stall speed going to be? if it is less then 2000 you probalby will be close to stall speed at 70 mph if you have a 3.08.....on my car with a 2500 stall speed and 3.08 it still has lots of "float" at 75+ with the lock up turned off

My 700R4 was set up that way initially but suffered an unrelated failure within 1000 miles. I cannot say with complete certainty but It's my impression that this is not the manner preferred by most hi-performance trans builders for lockup control.

Hey Bob! No, I'm neck deep in the repaint project. After that I will redo the interior along with modifying the shift plate to allow use of 1st gear.

I liked my lockup but it was done manually. I pressed a button and the lockup engaged, Touched the botton a second time and it disengaged or touching the brake also disengaged it.
I did have problems with breaking the lockup loose under hard usage but it did pull the rpm down a few hundred rpm.
