Where is the best place to mount the Spal controller and additional relay. Also, where is the best place to tap off for ignition (switched) power? I guess this would not be a problem if I did not care what it looked like when complete, but I am **** and want it to look like a professional job, not slapped on the fender with some drywall screws holding it in place, and wires running everywhere.
I installed a Spal relay box and bolted it up under the fenderwell on the A/C side. Since I don't have A/C anymore. I used the hot wire from the compressor harness to trigger the relay when I turn the "AC" on with the switch in the cabin...nothing else to add. Just make sure you get switched power so the relay isn't energized all the time.

Here is how I set mine up.
and I used this sensor (in the PASS side head) - it is "plug and play" with the Spal Controller!

I would NEVER use drywall screws - duct tape is sooo much easier, and you can get it in different colors to compliment your engine compartment
Seriously - I am watching this also, as will be putting in electric cooling fans myself in the next few months....the pics are great! As you are ****, take pics of what you end up with - lead the way for us slackers ...
Hey, I think that coolant sensor is the solution to my problem!
My OEM sender doesn't seem to be able to trigger the fans to turn on, so I'm having to manually turn on the a/c to force them on.
Where can I find one of those? I PM'd pws69 to learn more about it.
Also, where are you guys getting the 12 volt switched power. I have mine hooked up to the positive side of the coil...but now I'm not so sure it was a good idea since I believe it's a reduced voltage.
BTW - I mounted my controller inside the left fenderwell, behind the carbon canister. On my '71 I can remove the side grille and get right to it.
I think this is a good idea for some new wiring in old chevy's.
From Mad Electronics. also with remote solenoid for starter.
. . . . . . . . o . . . . . . =
I agree, MAD has some excellent information AND products.
You will notice in my pictures that I used a terminal block - it came from MAD as well as the wire and terminals. It was just too easy to order the parts after I read all of the material - everything you need is right there! Sure, you can get everything locally, but I always like to throw business to people who offer a ton of good advise and help with their product line.
The sensor was a direct plug in (two wire, weatherhead connector) and has worked perfectly. I purchased it at NAPA.
If anyone has questions, feel free to ask here or send me a PM and I'll be glad to help out.
I mounted my relay on the drivers side firewall (to the left of the winshield washer motor // right of the Power brakes booster) where there's a large area without anything mounted. '75 Vette
I tapped my power off of the Alternator - To only have it able to energize when the ignition is on. You can also tap off the Starter if you want power all the time (from the battery).
