I got my new engine home tonight and started to install the harmonic balancer...Two issues....
1. I cant tell if the harmonic balancer is going all the way up on the crank snout...how can you tell this? How far down in the balancer should the snout be
2. would it be easy to strip the crank snout threads?...or would the bolt mess up first. i started running the crank bolt up and all seemed fine then all of a sudden it stopped...tried to take it back out and liked to never got it. finally after i did i see several of the thread messed up. PLease tell me the crank will be ok and the bolt would go first...
Did you use the correct bolt? (Grade 8 and correct length). When fully installed, you should barely be able to get your fingers between the back of the balancer and the timing cover. If the pulleys line up, that confirms the balancer position. G/L

The correct way is to use a balancer installer. Many of the major manufactures and parts places have them. It is basically a gr 8 bolt with a special bearing to run it in straight without it binding up.

did i just hear the snapon truck pull up?
kidding, that is the right way
i took another look at it this morning, and there are some snout threads stripped out. Im going to run a tap thru and see if i can clean it up. Does anyone know if a longer than normal crank bolt is avail?

i just bought one from chevypartsguys on ebay, proform brand and it does SBC and BBC for $26 shipped.
ran a tap thru it and it cleaned right up. Bought new balancer bolt and behold its about inch longer then the one that was in there....seems someone along the way put the wrong bolt anyways...back to moving forward...actually even go engine installed
