i just made a deal with one of my nephews to sell him a fiero fairly cheap. $300, about what i have in it after buying it for $125.i was going to give it to him but i was told if he has to pay at least a little he might not take it for granted. i have another nephew, his cousin, that was in a serious accident and with part of a large settlement got a new car. i'm not really trying to play keeping up with the jones within my own family, but i thought it would be a good thing to do with the car. i only got it 'cause it was cheap and it would drain cash from other projects if i keep playing with it. it still needs brakes and a few other things that i know of but i thought i could explain things to him and see if i could get him interested in working on cars for fun.
anyway get yourself a vette and him a fiero (don't believe all the bad press. they're fun little cars). you can fix them up and kind of style them the same. if he keeps it long enough and shows responsibility maybe later you can try an engine swap for more power.
I bought a '58 Ford truck with lawn mowing money when I was 16. I didn't get my license until I was 17. Sure, I felt left out when everybody was driving to school in their Camaros (in 1982, the 78-81 Z-28's were the car of choice for my school), but I've made up for it since (a couple vettes, three mustangs, a couple hot chevelles, etc.). My Dad was a carpenter with no patience for mechanic work, and I liked working on cars with a dispise for sawdust. To this day, I do all the repairs on his cars, and he does a lot of the repairs on my house.
With insurance like it is, I say HELP him buy a car, HELP him work on it, and shoot for his 21st birthday for an all-out awesome car. BTW, I have a nice '89 Audi 100 that I need to get some Corvette fix-up money out of. It's cheeeeeep, whaddya say?
