I have 3.08s right now but i have a feeling with my 355 engine I am building with vortec heads, crane powermax 272 and 9.6-9.8 compression ratio, they will not work well. So could I use the less expensive and more previlent 3.36 ring and pinion or spend alittle more and get 3.55 gears.

Hi James. I sold you some 73 heads a while back. You will be much happier with 355 or 370 gears. I have a 355 rear end completly rebuilt with less than 1000 miles on it behind a 327 small block. I am building a new 383 500 HP W/ Nitrous and my working RPM range will be much higher now. I rebuilt a 411 for mine #800 springs full roller bearings, carbon fiber clutch pack. Billet side yokes. Series 4 carrier to handle the extra power.Have $1400 in my rebuild. The 355 is going to be sold. Cost me over $500 to rebuild it stock. Comes with the pumpkin, Rear end cover and a new spring $150 installed at the time of rebuild with all spring attaching hardware. It is the 78 model with larger pinion and spring. Will bolt right in if you use it all and your good to go. Will sell it crated and shipped for $850. Will take Paypal.
It depends on how you will use your car... Highway, stay with the 3.08's and work your way up for more accelleration and higher cruising RPM's... 3.36 and 3.55 would be better if you were doing road corse work and 3.70 - 4.11 for trips to the drag strip.
Then of course there's transmission selection & how much motor you have...
You gave us info on your motor, but it's your tranny that counts. Is it a 3 sp, 4 sp etc. You will not notice much difference by moving up too 3.36 from 3.08. Your 3.08 will work fine with you motor, you must decide how high you want to rev the motor at highway speeds. If you don't care about MPG, go for 3.55 or 3.70.
Last summer I ran 4.56 and at 60mph with a 3 speed auto, I was pushing low to mid 4000 rpm, fuel mileage sucked. I have now switched to 3.55, now 60mph is low 3000 rpm.

With his engine and a 1 to 1 final drive there probably won't be a huge difference in gas mileage with a 355 since the engine will be operating in a more efficient RPM range. With a 350 low rpm throttle response will be mediocere at best with a 308. A 456 is a whole different story. It sucks for highway cruising without overdrive.
