Looks like you broke the rear cover. The carrier is in the rear end housing- the ring gear is bolted to it. Get a HD cover from Muskegon and new bolts. Check the yoke end play too as this is a good time to replace them if needed. You'll have to remove the rear end to repair this.
If you need help let me know. I don't know if I have any covers left. I may have some original pre 78 covers with the 9/16 threaded holes. Yours should have the smaller 7/16 bolts.
If you or anyone else is interested I have a brand new (or like new, it`s hard to tell) rear cover for a `79 (small bolt/wide spring)..e-mail DIRECT redvetracr@msn.com

Wow I've never seen that. I know that I have seen references to it, in the MAD or Eckler's catalog where they sell covers that are reinforced to avoid just exactly what happened to you.
When I was taking my 75 apart I was unbolting the rear spring, and that ear broke off. It’s fairly common; you just have to get one of the HD diff covers. It’s only the diff cover. Unfortunately to get it off you have to take down the cross member on top, use a lot of WD-40 or BP blaster because the rubber bushings that it sits on can bind up easy. Good luck
