Default Threw it in the bin

Did a little work on my 81 over last weekend.

AC was shot so removed it all the way back to the cast plastc / fibreglass or whatever pod. Whats inside there - can I remove that all the way back to the bulkhead / firewall without any problems. Am guessing there are no heater components in there - just AC stuff - am I right ??

Next was the mechanical fan assembly - which weighs a ton and is bugger all use in West Wales.

Took it for a spin - drastic improvement to power and lack of noise. Fired up electric fan and that should be enough come the summertime - if we get one !!!!

Redid the timing to about 10 BTDC -.

Cant wait for true duels instead of my bunged up cat.
With the cat as is - the exhaust smells terrible - the worst of any car I have been near in 50 years - would make your eyes water and your nose drop off - terrible beyond belief. So, just how bunged up is that cat ??

You might notice that the blower fan for the HVAC system sticks out of that pod...

Not if you want to at least have some ventilation...

Does the smell smell like rotten eggs? or is it just a smell that makes your eyes water? could you be running rich on the idle mixture? I remember when the cats came out you could tell which car had one due to the rotten egg smell they gave off with high sulpher fuel. hope that i never smell that oder again. are you going to do away with the cat with your true duals? if so if it stills burns your eyes then it's fuel mixture at idle.

The fan on the pod runs the heater and defrost also not just AC. I would leave the pod/blower assy in place.

The AC can be made to work with a more modern compressor and changing to R134 freon. However I agree that going through that effort may not be worth it for your climate

with true duals the cat is going in the bin.

Do not need AC in Wales - just a bloody good heater most of the time !!

Re exhaust - tempted to think a little rich at the moment but will be able to find out after duals arrive.
