Default Jeep Box questions

My used (but seemingly in nice shape) Jeep steering box arrived yesterday. I'm going to have plenty of questions about the lines and connections for the power steering and Hydroboost together.

Norval - your setup is what inspired me to go in this direction - do you have any pictures of how you routed the high and low presssure lines? I don't remember any from your old threads on the subject, but I might just be having one of those "duh..." moments.

Better steering $55 (so far).
Better brakes $35 (so far).
Getting rid of another vacuum part and all that clunky power steering equipment...priceless.

I got my Jeep Box from www.corvettesteering.com. Instructions came with it.

I found Norval's old post about the adapters, and Jim Shea's ehaustive list of the various fittings involved. What is the best material to use for the high and low pressure lines? Now I just need to dig around the archives to see if anyone has a Jeep box/Hydroboost plumbing diagram listed...

I drove a 71 the other day with the Jeep box and I was very impressed. You can probably get lines made at a good hydraulic shop. If not, get the lines for the pump and the box and have 45 deg "bullnose" fittings put into each to connect them. You can deal with different size lines if necessary. You don't have to be concerned with exact direction of fittings because you can turn the line. You can cover the junction with convoluted tubing.

While I don't have pictures I have plumbed my hydroboost/jeep box. It is really simple.
First I buy 4 adapters. The jeep box and the hydroboost use the same adapters. I buy 2 16 mm adapter to #6 hose and 2 18 mm adapter to #6 hose.
In the jeep box the 18 mm adapter is the input for the box and in the hydroboost the 18mm is also the input for the hydroboost.
So you run the main line from the power steering pump into the hydroboost 18mm fitting. You then run another line out the 16mm fitting on the hydroboost INTO the 18 mm on the jeep box. The 16mm on the jeep box is a return line to the power steering pump.
ON the hydroboost is another low pressure fitting and this is another return to the power steering box.
For all lines I use #6 stainless line and russel fittings.
I can help more if you need it

There are two return lines on the Hydraboost? I haven't looked at mine too closely. I did notice that it has some sort of hose barb, what in the heck is that thing for?

One of the lines on the hydroboost is not a return line, it runs to the next power unit.
The 18 mm fitting or the big one is inlet from the pump, the 16 mm is outlet, not return and this outlet goes to the inlet of the jeep box. The jeep box inlet is again 18mm. The jeep return is 16mm, this goes back to the pump.
The return on the hydoboost just uses a soft line and returns to the pump

Norval, if you don't mind one more stupid question - how did you join the two return lines for the pump?

It has no pressure on the return line so a "T" hose fitting can be used.

That is correct the return is low pressure so any T fitting and hose clamps would work.
For looks only I run high pressure fittings and lines for return as well but it is only for looks.

Remember the 16mm output on the hydroboost is not a low pressure line but a output , a high pressure output that is to go to the power steering box.

Sweet. Now if I can ever get the new engine underway, pull the old one, and start chopping on the frame for the Jeep box...
