I need help here fellas, I am keeping the stock am/fm unit but will need new speakers. Will the new technology speakers fit in the old dash without modifications?
What brands do you suggest?
Space around the speaker is a real issue on my '82, so after looking at a lot of options I purchased the dual cone hi-output speakers from Ecklers. Part nr. A5097 at $39.99 for a pair. For as little time that I listen to my stereo, they work great.
Is there any way we can fit a bigger speaker in there?
I figure, If the magnet wont affect the gauges, and it doesn't have too deep of a cone, I'd install 2 6x9's. I'd leave the dash pad alone, of course, for appearances sake, so I guess that it'll have to be mounted underneath.
Can it be done???
You can also go to http://www.crutchfield.com and they have a speaker fit guide. Just plug in the car info and it will tell you what speakers they carry fit. Prices aren't too bad either. Bought a couple car stereos and home components fom them. Good service and free tech/installation support over the phone :seeya
Question is what speakers will the stock AM-FM radio drive without an amp? Anyone know the power output of the stock unit? It can't be very high, 2W?? I know most of the low end speakers support as low as 2W.
Don't know for sure but I have a problem with my right speaker or my right channel. So I took apart the front dash section and while I was snooping I saw what appeared to be an amp anyway it had cooling fins on it and the speaker wires went through it and it is a factory install but do not know about the amp drive on it and don't know if a 74 has the same setup. Might want to check Stewart you may already have an amp.
