Default Door panel question

As a brand new 69 vette owner (one week) I am collecting info as fast as I can but do not have an assembly manual or service manual yet and I have a question. Since the car ignition key does not work the door locks I have to have new door lock keys made and I therefore must take one of the door locks out and take it to the locksmith. I have all the screws out of the door panel including the two that hold the interior door pull but how do I get the door locking **** off? It seems to be the thing holding the door panel on. Is there a special tool I need or a retainer of some kind that I need to look for?

Appreciate your help in advance.

Hi Chuck
If it's like my 74 the lock **** has a retainer clip just like the window crank. It's hard to get off with the clip remover tool because you don't have the clearance to get it behind the **** without scratching everything. I usually use a small flat blade screwdriver and pop the clip off with that. Once the clip is off you can take the **** off and the panel should come off. You might also have to remove the door handle that opens and closes the door. There's a screw that holds it in place. Once the screw is removed you can slide the handle forward and off. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Found the right tool on the shelf at my local NAPA auto parts store for $4.50. The same tool can also be used to quickly disengage the velcro style fastners.

I usually fashion a hook out of a large paper clip. Just slip it over the clip and with a pair of pliers give it a firm pull -- almost always works.

Thanks guys, since the car will be at my mechanics shop for an exhaust manifold replacement starting Wednesday I think I will let them pop off the **** then we will work on getting the lock out. At sometime in the historyof this car someone must have replaced the ignition switch because the ignition key won't go into the door but a little way. Must be a different year ignition switch. Now if I can just figure out what to do about getting to the spare tire. I have not tried to open it yet but from my original car manual it says I need a round head key. We looked at the glove box lock but it had been modified by someone so no hope of making a key from it.

Welcome to the world of 32 year old cars.

Unless your '69 is a lot different than my '79, the ignition key does not fit the door. The ignition key only operates the ignition and the rest, glove box and spare, are opened with the door key (round head).

The square door key (code E) should fit the ignition AND the doors. The round key should fit the rear comparment lock. A Briggs and Stratton key should fit the spare tire lock.

Thanks for the key clarification, I have not tried the spare yet but I don't have briggs and stratten key so I may have to have the locksmith work on that too.
