Still working on the 454 stroker and need advice for a fuel pump. Any suggestions are appreciated.
I am certainly NOT a fan of mechanical pumps. After having 2 or them rupture and fill the motor oil with gas I refuse to run one. Check with George, he had a similiar problem with the pump diaphram rupturing and pumping the crankcase full.
I run twin high pressure holley electric pumps mounted right below the tank. Twin pumps because I always have a spare if one packs it in. I do run them on seperate switches and most of the time only run one.
Put in a lightweight fuel pump pushrod and run a Carter NASCAR series big block pump. You will be fine with this set-up on your Vette.
I believe I HAVE one of those on my 427 BBC... that Carter "Street and Strip" model, bought it from Summit for something like $60... It's got a few hours of time on it, and that's IT.
Switching to EFI, I've already installed an Aeromotive A1000 electric pump, a mini regulator and the braided hoses... Was planning to remove the old fuel-pump in a week or two, and... either toss it, or give it to a "needy cause..."
After all, it's a used piece, not worth a hell of a lot... but it IS new, and nothing's wrong with it.
If you want it....? Drop me a PM.

Nothing wrong with a stock fuel pump, tried and true. Electric pumps fail as do mechanical pumps
But when a mechanical pump fails it can pump the motor full of fuel. If the electric pump fails it just stops pumping with no damage to the motor. I always run 2, both individually hooked up and like an airplane I alternate between pumps.
In the last 10 years I have not had a fail on either the vet or the mustang but again I still would want dual pumps.
Norval, that's a sweet looking engine and a sweeter looking dog on your post, but I'm slowing running out of $$ on my stroker project and breathial may be the answer from the motor gods to what I need. Breathial, I sent you a pm; looking forward to hearing from you.
All you need is a good mechanical pump and you cannot go wrong. Just make sure it`s for a BB, as the SB pumps look almost identical. Electric pumps are pushers and should be mounted as near to the tank as possible to work correctly and requires more changes than necessary. Use the L72 or L88 mechanical pump.

In all my years owning various makes of cars, from my very first ride, 53-Dodge (bought in '58) to the present...I've had only one mechanical pump failure, and 4 electric, two on a 92 Buick and 2 on a 86 Fiero.
