1968 / Steering colum moves
I am new in this forum, and just wanted to say hallo :-)
I have just bought my first Corvette - a nice 68 Targa which I imported to Denmark fra California.
I am getting it ready for the danish vehicle inspection, so I might have e few questions, hope it is okey
The steering colum is kind of loos - I can move it up and down a little. What would you guys surgest me to do? and where to start?
Thanks

You willl have to remove the column and disassemble to get to them screws.
I have a photo-manual in German if that would help....

Thomas
Thanks for your reply
No it is not a tilt-telescopic column, but I´ll be happy for any help you might have - can you email the photos??

Make sure that your entire steering column is securely fastened up into the instrument panel with three vertical screws under your dash. Also make sure that the lower end of the steering column is securely fastened to the floor with two more screws.
The 1968 Corvette had a standard (non-adjustable) steering column and an optional steering column that was telescoping only. The following are two links to my scans of the telescoping steering column:

Unfortunately, I haven't scanned the standard column as yet. However, looking at the blowup of the standard column, the upper bearing and turn signal switch seem to attach to the upper column area by means of three screws. You need to remove your steering wheel and hub in order to get at them. Those three screws thread into a collar on the upper end of the steering column tube. Check to make sure that they are tight.
Next, that collar is attached to the upper end of the steering column tube with three small screws. These small screws are on the outside diameter of the collar and tap directly into the sides of the steering column tube to hold it in place. Possibly they could be loose.
For Your Information: that same collar on the telescoping column appears to be welded to the upper tube. So that column won't have the three small screws holding the collar.
Hope this helps,
Jim
