sorry, need pics of the car before I can reply!

Is it a high compression L88 clone engine?

I think we are developing a consensus that we are supposed to use deisel oil for these old bigblocks. I am looking for that Shell Rotelle stuff, but they only sell it at truck stops!

i think a lot of members use zaino z-5, but i also think some brush their teeth w/zaino or maybe sleep w a bottle of zaino
personally, i use valvoline 10/40--wouldn't put any synthetic in one of these older sbc engines except after a complete rebuild given the way most of 'em want to leak at one end or the other--i think about any name brand dino oil will work if you change it every 3-5K miles and drive it like you stole it

good luck

I either use Royal Purple 10W30 or Mobil 1 10W30 with K&N oil filters

I thought about using Mobil 1 with a supplement of ValvolineSynPower Oil Treatment. But I posted a question to the mobil1 techs about this & this is the reply I got:

Mobil does not recommend the use of any oil additives with Mobil motor
oils. Theses products are not licensed and alter the chemical balance
and formulation of the motor oil.

So, I'm still not sure what to use.

newly rebuilt original motor 3 years ago, body off restore done at the same time period, wouldnt choose anything but Mobil 1 (10w-30). If storing it during the winter months, put a quarter to half of a quart of Lucas stabilizer in it also. Make sure to use either an ac-delco oil filter, or a wix filter. K&N are great also, but expensive. I do have a K&N air filter, just because its more permanent (just needs cleaned every now and then). Change the oil before and after storage. (at least thats what I do).

It looks like there are a lot of Mobile 1 users here. Does anyone know how much zinc is in Mobile 1? mountainmotor listed the zinc content of many oils in another thread but I didn't see this one listed. I found one web site that claims around 800ppm which, if true, would be a bit low for engines without roller cams according to some of these past threads.

Delo 15w40 oil for diesel engines. I buy it by the case at Costco, but you can find it along with Rotella at Walmart, GIJoes, etc.

Mobil 1 10w-30. Been using it for at least 5 years with no problems. Engine is original block and reciprocating assembly that was freshened with new rings and bearings. The only leak I have is a very slight drip from the rear main seal but I think that's standard equipment on these cars.

Right now I have Valvoline 10w30 standard grade, after reading all these threads I am going to switch to Valvoline VR1 10w30 Racing Oil to bump up to a higher zinc content, I have a mechanical roller cam, but with the money I have in the engine decided I would use a higher grade oil. Using Wix Race Filter.
