I don't know about a '76 but I assume that it's the same as earlier C3's..
Don't see where the problem is?
Well, if you don't have sidepipes, the exhaust will have to come off. Then the spare tire carrier (if you have one) has to come off and then you'll have to loosen the 2 straps that hold the tank in place. Well, you'll also have to drain it before you pull it and disconnect the fuel line (and return line if you have one). Once the metal straps are opened. the tank should come down pretty easily.. My '68 race Vette has sidepipes and no spare tire carrier and it took less than 20 minutes to pull the tank...
I just got some info from Lars on my Carb. He recommends that I pull the feul tank and have it acid dipped or boiled.
Thanks,
Zachary
If your fuel tank has degraded to where acid dipping, etc is recommended, why just not buy a new one. They just are not that expensive. Some if the repro tanks appear to be exact duplicates of the factory originals.
Ive seen some repo and NOS tanks on ebay. Really reasonable in price as well. I would post the links but.... dare I do it... NAAAA I dont want the ebay forum police banning me.
Good luck! This is a project I have to tackle soon so take a lot of pics and post please!!!
I just dropped the tank on my 77 a couple of weekends ago (Actually with the help of Lars). As mentioned above, remove the spare tire assembly (three bolts), remove the exhaust (we removed it at the cat, four bolts), and then remove the cross member that holds the tank up. The tank rotates down and then slides out. Two people was very nice because the fuel hoses could be reinstalled from the top. Make sure that when you reinstall the fuel lines that they do not cross over the tank. Mine did and it caused the line to crimp and I would lose fuel pressure. All is well now that the tank has been reinstalled. Easy job with two people. Good luck.

I checked Ebay for corvette gas tanks and I found two used ones for 75 - 77, I haven't looked at mine in awhile but I don't think it's in too bad shape, I can give it the por-15 fuel tank sealent treatment and it should be good to go without replacing the tank outright with a tank I'd end up doing the same thing to.
I'll try to take a picture of every step in the process and put up a page after I'm done, with rain coming for the next four days it may take awhile to get to it.
Since you posted this, I've went out and took a look at mine. I bought my '77 in Nov and am just now going through it. I have the entire rear-end & suspension out and I noticed two things:
1.) There is a rubber hose hanging down clamped to the frame and it looks like it use to go up to the tank. Any thoughts?
2.) I see localized patches of rust (obviously not through) around the bottom surface. Should I drop the tank too?

I would guess this is the overflow hose from the top of your tank near your rubber boot/fill valve but im not an expert. Im sure someone else will chime in that knows for sure.
...'75-'77 Corvette tanks cannot be acid dipped or boiled due to the fact they have rubber bladder liners in them if they are original and have not been previously removed from the tank. The bladder can be pulled to dip or boil the tank, but that's another job in itself.
Get rid of the tank and but a new one. you can purchase one for under $200. While doing this replace the sending unit and over spill gasket at the top of the tank because the new ones will not come with it. Also replace any other gaskets while your at it. The filter for the sending unit usually dosen't come with it either. Drill a hole in the bottom of the gas tank to let the old rusty and half water mixture out before pulling it. You should not have to pull the exaust totally off if it is a rear system. Just disconect at the mufflers and tie them out of the way to drop the tank. Try www.gastanks.com for a replacement. Good luck
