Default Engine number help

The engine west south in my recently acquired 79 vette. I am pretty sure the motor is not the factory. I pulled the numbers on the rt frt of the block. 12J179724 & TI208CKP . I wiped a cam lobe and I would like to know if this is something worth building? So if anyone can help. Is there anywhere else to look? Thanks.

well any SBC motor is a good potential to rebuild.....why do you think you wiped a cam lobe?

Because the lifter is pumped up and the rocker arm is not moving. It is popping through the carb. Looking like #8 intake lobe is shot. I don't think I will be able to save the motor. Upon further inspection there is a 6 inch crack on the side of the block that has been welded up. I just wanted to know what I had. I really don't have time to rebuild so I think I will give Jasper a call tomorrow.

The book I have says that when it was origional the motor was:

1972, 400cid, 170hp, 2bbl, Caprice, Turbo Hydromatic Trans.

The casting numbers listed should be on the left side by the trans housing should be one of the following:

330817 - 2-bolt main
3030817 - 2-bolt main
3951509 - 2-bolt main
3951511 - 4-bolt main

Excellent motor, 4.125 standard bore, this is the engine the 383 got its torque from.

You are correct. The numbers are not for a Corvette engine.
