I searched thoroughly and couldn't find advice on this anywhere on the forum. I've got fuel lines on my 73 (both the feed and return) which are rusting from the inside out. I am definitely NOT going to lift the body off the frame, and was wondering if anyone has had experience running steel braided rubber hose (with an inner teflon liner) all the way from gas tank to fuel pump to carb. I'm adverse to trying to thread and splice steel hard line through all the crevices. (And aluminum doesn't meet my (or the federal government's) crash spec.) Did any of you do this and did you have any specific problems getting it placed in the right places or using the original hard line fastening points?
I ran -8AN fuel line from the tank to the engine on the passenger side and a return line back to the tank on the driver's side. Not too bad. I used new hose clamps in the original locations since the hose is much bigger than the line. The hardest part was threading the line through the rear and up over the wheel frame arch. I covered the end with duct tape to protect it.
This shot shows clearance between frame and body at rear wheel area. Wire is for my rear mounted fuel pump.
Cool, thanks for the photo. Did you run the lines on opposite sides (drivers and passengers) because there wasn't enough room to run them both on the same side? And any suggestions on what brand of braided line to buy? (I'm assuming you used the teflon stuff?)
This may or may not help, but I installed new brake lines with the body on. These were the one piece stainless steel lines as well. Before going the braided route, you may want to spend some time under the car really trying to see if you can get new steel lines in there. With a tubing bender, you can make some small bends that will make it easier to get the lines in. The fuel lines don't even have the bent up sections at the ends like the brake lines. Just a thought.

I ran them on opposite sides for two main reasons. Like you said, there are places where there just wasn't space for two lines. Also, my setup has the intake line on the engine coming into the passenger side, and the exit from a fuel injection fuel rail exits on the driver's side. It would have been a giant pain to get extra hose to cross it back under the engine just to run it back on the passenger side.
I used Aeroquip hose which I think has some teflon or similar lining...
