I just bought this 78 and have noticed the gas gauge flops around like a fish out of water.(unless i'm not moving) This is my first C3 and I would like to here from you guys if this is normal??????
My 77 does it, too. I know it's not the gauge ground, so it has to be a sending unit problem. I'll get around to fixing it one of these days. My "low fuel" light never goes off, either. A forum member kindly provided the instructions to build an adjustable circuit to rectify that (which I also haven't done).
If all the connections and sending unit are good, the gauge is bad. We went through the same problem on our '81 vette.
The gauge also acts as damper for the motion of the float on the sending unit. When the gauge wears out, the needle will follow the motion of the float on the sending unit instead of staying steady. You'll notice when you first get in the car the needle is still. Once you set the car in motion the needle starts jumping around.
We bought a new gauge from Zip for $59 April 2005
Part#-D-323 / 78-82 Fuel Gauge / *H20208*
It is a AC Delco / GM Restoration Parts product. That cured the twitchy needle syndrome. Even the low fuel light comes on now.
Good luck!
