After driving, there is a strong fuel odor from the rear end. (Goes away after a while)
So I have raised the rear end. removed the exhaust, and spare tire and carrier. I see no indication at all of a leaking tank. I can tell where the gas lines run along the top of the frame, but no indication of leaking.
I guess now, I drop the tank. I am assuming (and after reading prior posts) that there must be a section of flexible gas line from the hard lines to the connection on the tank. This must be where the leak is coming from. ( unless any of you folks have another place to check)
My question is do I just undo the straps and let the tank down, or do I need to undo the fuel lines somehow. If so, how?
Kev, before you drop your gas tank try replacing your gas cap it may not be venting properly. Also check & see it the vent line to the just forgot the name of the vac canister. make sure all the vent lines are hooked up to the can on the driver side next to the fender & fire wall.
had the same problem, turned out it was the little 6in or so, of hose
between the valve and the line. It was cracking. Just old.
Of coarse this is all on top of the fuel tank.
I found that I could lower the tank a few inches onto a jack, and give
myself enough room to unclamp the lines.
On my 70 it turned out to be the cork filler neck gasket gone bad. The thing that really sucked was the fact that the gas washed away all of the print on my tank sticker...
