Default outside mirror loose

my outside mirrors on the 1970 are loose. I'm looking to get the fit tighter against the body of the car. I notice a hex head set screw near the base but I can't seem to find the right size allen wrench to fit it. I don't want to force it.

A) is this how to tighten the mirror to the door panel?

B) anyone know the exact size wrench needed for this so I don't harm anything?

This is sort of hard to explain. That hex head goes into a bracket that is in the base of the mirror head. If you take that hex head out you would see it. The base has two screws that go into the side of the door. The hex headed screw does not really screw into this base. it more or less goes thru a loop in the base and screws into itself. Back to your original question, I do not think it would tighten it up that much. I have a spare base laying around somewhere from my 70 if you would like to see a pic of it.

Default mirror mount

on my 76 the hex screw holds the mirror to the mounting bracket, which is attached to the car. you need to find the right size hex wrench to remove the mirror from the mounting bracket. then you can tighten the mounting bracket to the body. it's attached with rubber expanding grommets called well nuts. you can get well nuts at Ace hardware. you do all this from outside the car. really easy. this is what I learned from the forum guys!!!

Here is the pic. The round hole in the center is where the allen bolt goes thru and threads back into the mirror.

That piece looks like the same shape as where the mirror base meets the door with a rubber gasket. If I'm loose at this part...I mean this tear dropped part is what wiggles, will the allen head being tight even help? Or do i need to secure this piece in a different fashion?

I just took the left side mirror off this morning. The allen wrench required was 5/32. My mirror mounting bracket is attached to the door with two phillips screws. I assume there is some kind of metal plate inside the door that accepts the two screws. I'm always afraid at this point that I'll hear a "tink" as I take the two screws out and the plate falls inside the door! A five minute job ......sure it is.

When I replaced mine I took off that whole plate with no problem. From what I know the whole door is metal with a fiberglass shell. I think maybe your philip screws might be loose. If you can get that allen bolt out you can see if the plate is loose.

Tightening the allen screw firmed my mirror right up.

I had a loose mirror. It wasn't the mounting plate. It was the length of the screw thread on the tapered pin. It was just a bit too long and was bottoming out when you screwed it into the mirror. So it was tight where it threaded into the mirror but the taper wasn't tight into the plate. I ground the tip down and things are tight now.

Thanks to all for the help!

Try grinding the tip of the A2046C Allen screw. That might tighten things up a lot more.
