I was reading thru service manual Hayes. They state that the clutch fork ball studs on an L48 & L82 are different? If so if a stud from a 48 was installed in the bell housing of an 82 would it hamper shifting. I had to have mine replaced a few years ago. i have always had trouble shifting this trans (25yrs) I am wondering if the factory installed the wrong bell housing on my 82, and that has been the problem? If so when they replaced it they probally replaced it with a matching part. I talked to a local guy that restores Vettes for his livelyhood and he shaid that the bell housing & blocks(mounting) are the same. Thanks.
I know that GM makes two different length ball studs. I have a Lakewood blow shield and a Centerforce dual friction clutch. I went through a big ordeal trying to get my clutch geometry straight. You want your clutch fork to be almost perpendicular to the transmission.
Originally, there were 2 different ball studs used for Corvettes. Most 55-65 used ball stud GM #3729000, which is a 1-1/2" length stud. 1966 to early 1975 used GM #3887159, which is a 1-3/8" stud. Late 1975-81 went back to the 3729000 stud. The 3887159 stud was discontinued many years ago and replaced by the 3729000. So, now, the 3729000 is the ONLY part available from GM to SERVICE all 55-81 Corvette applications.
Thanks Fellows,
Since the car is a 76, it seems safe to say it has the right ball installed. If that was the only one still available, they had to get it right. I was hoping it was my problem.
