Default Steeroids steering wheel play...

I've got the Steeroids kit on my '71. The play in the steering wheel isn't as tight as I would like or expect it to be. The lower bearing on the column has been replaced, and everything else is tight.

What visually appears to be the "looseness" are the u-joints that connect the column to the rack. There just seems to be some inherent play with them.

I'd say that my wheel has maybe between 1/2" and 1" of play. For the price that kit costs, it really bugs me that it's not tight, and it just feels cheap.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, were you able to fix it?

Thanks for any advice...

no some thing isn't right....1/8" inch movement on my car has the wheels turning.....try adjusting the heim joint a little differently....you are close just take a little more time and play with that joint you will be really happy on the first drive.

hate to keep throwing this up in the face of the steeroids faithful.

with such a touchy setup on the triple u joint. what happens when the frame flexes. is your steering gonna lock.

this scares me as much as wheel adapters.

I am not much for 3 universal joints from column to rack either, but in fact many many many a vechicle comes that way from the factory....
by ALL makers....

I have had VBP wheel adaptors on my shark for over ten years now....

not an issue in the world...and I do some heavy driving...

i don't think thats an issue on my car ....i routinely jack my car up and support it in various places on the frame and i have had no issues with turning the wheels. i've even tried it with three jack stands in place just for fun also..no locking on my car

71SoCal there is definitely something amiss if you have that much play. First I would recommend double checking all the set screws on the u-joints. You may even want to tighten them in the sequence of first the set screw on the flat of the shaft, then the curved area (this is really only for the lower u-joint on the rack unit). Next, is there at least .8" of engagement of the shaft (steering column too) into all of the u-joints? If all that checks out then you may want to try adjusting the bearing a little (as bobs77vet mentioned). If all this doesn't do anything then a few digital photos e-mailed to our tech department will give us a better chance to spot something unusual.
