Default Birthday present: Side pipe info needed

My fiance' has a 69 vert w/ the L46, and she wants to put side exhaust with the factory (looking) covers, etc. I'm a C4 guy, so please be gentle, but I want to get her a good set of ceramic-coated pipes fed by 1-5/8" tube headers that tuck up nicely (read: don't drag on every steeeenking bump, like they do now!). What say U SBC C3ers - what would you suggest for her "baby"??

These guys have BBC headers that are a direct bolt on to factory side pipes. Worth a call to see if they have the same for SBC. If not maybe Thorley or Stahl have direct bolt ons.

Good luck

OK ... L46 is a SMALL block ... Hedman makes 1-5/8" P/N 68280 http://www.hedman.com/pages/popular-photos/68280.tif for use with C3 side pipes (coated are P/N 68286). For BIG Block C3 with sidepipes use Hedman P/N 68210 http://www.hedman.com/pages/popular-photos/68210.tif (coated are P/N 68216). There's a gent (b71vette) here on this forum who (along w/ his son) recently completed a very cool sbc C3 factory-type sidepipe setup using the Hedman ... he had nice details & photos in his threads: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1316829 ... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1333517 ... or maybe he'll chime in. If you don't care about a factory-type sidepipe look ... the Hooker Sidepipes are very popular.

Thanks for the compliments Jackson.

Paul, if you want to go with the factory sidepipes & 1 5/8" headers and the SBC is stock I don't see the need to go to the expense and time of fabricating the 3" like my son and I did. Our SBC is a 383 stroker w around 500hp so we wanted all that HP to breath. This set-up also required modification to the expensive OEM 69 covers in order for the 3" to tuck up neatly and it is a tight clearance to frame and cover. Also rear brackets for the covers were fabricated out of aluminum stock from yeah Home Depot .

This would be my suggestion:
1.Go with the Hedman sidepipe 68280 headers bare - no coating. Test fit to your vehicle and tweak as necessary (We had to dimple the passenger side header in order to clear the idler arm grease fitting and grind the collector flange down a bit on driverside to clearance more for the frame when the engine torques. Once you have them fitting nicely send off to Jet-Hot for coating, We used the Sterling Coating, ask them for a discount, sometimes they have specials running. I was considering the Stahl sidepipe headers but due to cost and some issues I'd heard about poor customer service I went with the Hedman's purchased thru Jegs. We used the Earl's header gaskets EAR-29D03BERL from Summit and ARP S.S. 12-point header bolts.

2. Use the OEM69 Side exhaust mufflers which will need to be cut and welded to the header collector. I have a like new set of the regular steel, we were going to use when our original plan was an OEM restoration but decided to go the high HP route. PM me if interested in these. You can also get these in stainless steel from Paragon for about twice the price of regular steel, I would go this route instead of having the regular steel Jet-Coated.

3. Use the OEM 69 Covers - Very Pricey, Check-out Paragon for these, I believe they are the supplier to all the Vette Stores. http://www.corvette-paragon.com/

Glad to answer any questions you have.

Here is a couple pics of our 3" set-up:
