does it have to be a tdc. Im going to remove the old one tomarrow and i have no way of turning the car over because all of the stuff from the old dist is in the new one. if you followed my earlier post i broke the 2 post where the advace spring attaches.
Note what direction the rotor is pointing and where the #1 spark plug socket on the cap is and match the positioning of these two when installing the new one. You may need to use a long bladed screw driver to get the oil pump clocking back into position so the new distributor will engage it and seat fully. It often gets out of alignment when removing the old distributor.
Look down the hole where the distributor normally is and you'll see the end of a shaft that has a slot cut into it, then look on the bottom of the distributor shaft below the gear and you'll see a matching blade that engages that slot. The trick is to get the slot on the oil pump aligned such that the new distributor engages the oil pump and ends up with the rotor pointing in the same direction as the old one did.
Hope I haven't confused you.
If you've got a couple inches of play in your plug wires, the EASIEST way is to figure out which cylinder (or between which two) your rotor is pointing to on you current cap. Write it down. Pull your old distributor and without the wires attached, drop the new one in where your tach drive and vacume advance are where you want them so as not to kink the cables or lines. Put the rotor on and where it is pointing is now the same as before. Just put the plug wires into the distributor cap in clockwise order (from above) 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. This will save you hours of time trying to get the right tooth and alignement.
the only dumb question is the one not asked, and beleave me i have asked some dumb questions. but if your mechanically inclined and have a couple wrenches in the garage and nuthing to do for an hour you can do it no problem. is it the same destributor? or are you upgrading? if its the same dont disconect all the wires just the ones you need to to get it out of the way and its a simple un plug and un bolt, and look at the clock position on the roter and get it close and re bolt and plug it in,.,.... and so on and so on and scooby doobie do sorry long day.
I usually take a piece of chalk and mark the location of the rotor on the intake. I also mark a reference point of the cap on the intake with the chalk.
