Default Quick Question(s) - Radiator Support - Which one?!!

On my 70, I have pulled my old radiator and suspension and while I was cleaning up the rad support I noticed is was rusting away. I know a problem with these cars. My conscience is getter the better of me though I really don't want spend another $400.

Is it as easy as unbolting the support and swapping in a new one or is there more to it...welding?

Also, there seem to be two options, a 26" or a 27". I measured the gap where the radiator was and it was about 27.5". Why did GM use both a 26 and a 27 other than for big blocks?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the size difference but it is an easy bolt in operation.

There were various sizes based on engine sizes and auto/stick/AC options. I've got an aftermarket 31" in mine....

Mine is rusted out too (at the bottom). Since they are so expensive, I'm going to see if a metal shop can cut out the rusted area, and fab up a new piece. I plan on drilling drain holes too!

Won't do this till the summer/fall so If someone else has any luck - Post what ya did!

Thanks.

I sucked it up and bought the support. I changed evrything else it just seemed stupid not to get the structure up to par.

I just did the same thing. Mine was a little rusted out at the bottom, still usable but I have always replaced any rust. The new support did require a little work to get it in but I made it fit.

Mine had a few rust holes but was structurally sound so I inserted metal rods in the hollow spaces then filled the whole thing with resin then sanded and painted the whole thing. It is now real solid and sealed from the inside.

I prefer to fab and weld up the originals. I know they fit and I can add more support to the bottom where it can't be seen.

Haven't gotten to welding yet. I can't wait to get a MIG though.
