Default Front spring problem

I'm still working on installing a street and slalom kit on my 1980 L-82, and I'm having a problem removing the part that connects the front upper and lower a-arms. I don't know what its called...steering knucle spindle maybe?

I have the van steel suspension video, and when they do it it falls off after two hits with a hammer. Mine didn't, so I'm wondering what I can do to get it off without damaging anything. (I don't know anything about ball joints, thats my main concern.)

I'm soooo close, my last real challenge is changing the front springs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

Do you have the pickle fork wedge?

Just wedge this between the ball joint and spindle and hit it with a hammer. Your ball joints probally need to be replaced so don't worry about damaging them. Make sure you have something to compress the spring so it doens't fly out and kill you.

Do you have, or could you get some air tools? A pickle fork seems to work a whole lot better when you use an air powered impact hammer. Also, some of the large suspension bolts come off a lot easier, and with a lot less damage, if you use an air powered impact wrench.

I'll try the pickle fork and if that doesn't work I'll borrow a compressor.

How can I tell if my ball joints need to be replaced?

BTW thanks for the replies

Jack up car.
Grab tire at top and bottom.
Try to wiggle tire.
If tire wiggles (and lug nuts aren't loose) ball joints are fried.
