Default MSD Ignition Box failure symptoms

Can anyone describe if there are symptoms (other than complete failure) that indicate a failing ignition box? Thanks.

Only my experience....backfiring,stumble,then nothing....later found a wiring issue thru ignition allowing a surge that blew circuit in box...
Go to MSD site..they have a good trouble shooting guide in their instructions....you can follow instructions to check your system...
Are you having issues ?

yea, they have a good troubleshooting guide.

I had problems with my box once, a voltage spike shorted out a diode or two inside. They fixed it for free, no problem.

I learned not to clean the electrodes inside the distributor cap....

It won't hit a lick.....get a new cap.

I have a new cap and rotor, plugs and wires and readjusted the carb for the colder months.

But now it seems at that there is what I describe as a blip in an otherewise smooth idle, like a miss or intermittent short.

my first box a 6 a failed.....lars has it now,i had it rebuilt by msd and went with a 6 al,, the car still ran,,but lousy,,what happened was,,when i bought the car the guy took off the msd box,,he wanted to keep it,, so i already had the blaster coil,,so i bought the msd 6 a box,,,well from driving with the oil filled coil mounted on my intake(at a angle) a air bubble formes in the windings,,the coil burned out and shorted out the ms d box,,, the car limped home,,, when i went to get the 6 al box i told the speed shop i also needed a coil, and that i wanted to keep the coil mounted on the intake,,,the guy told me that i would have to run a dry type coil,,,a dry type can be mounted upside down if you wish,,but a oil filled coil should be mounted plumb,,so a air bubble will not form,,,to answer your question the msd can fail and the car will runat least it did for me,,,but barely ran

My HI6 is mounted behind the map pocket. It has been there for 6 years now with no problems. I changed intakes recently and went with a dry coil. Runs flawless to 7000+ rpm. I fire the box with a set of heavy duty points mounted in the stock Dist.

My MSD 6 lasted for seven years until a surge hit it and disabled it...MSD fixed the box at no charge knowing the box did not fail on it's own...
