I have a 4-speed Super T-10 in my '79. When I shift 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th, the stick hits the back of the console and it sometimes does not allow it to fully engage, so it has occasionally popped out causing an embarassing grinding noise. I took it to a guy to have it adjusted, but he says it is adjusted as far as it can go. He says I either have to raise the tranny or lower the console.
Does anyone else have this problem and what is the answer?
I' ve had that problem in my 74. It was a matter of loosening the console and pushing it down. Every once in a while it starts again and I end up doing the same thing. No big deal but it would have been better if GM gave a little more wiggle room at the console opening.
Is it possible that it is due to a flattened transmission mount? I probably have the original in there and if it's flattened over time, maybe I can boost it up a little with a new one. They're like $10 ($35 for a poly one). I don't know if that's enough to correct this problem though. Maybe a combination of both will do it.
Replace the tranny mount...cheap enough to do....I have a 78 4 speed...never had the issue as I put new tranny mount in when original clutch was replaced at 112,000 miles...

before a total rebuild. Replaced all linkages, bushings, etc... The shifter was then installed with the tranny out, and once it went back in, it never hit again.
If the T-10 side links (the ones that are attached to the trans) has the short throw holes set it up for that. Your throw from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 will go from about 6 inches to about 2 inches. Man it feels great too.
The first thing I would check is if the support assembly (what is what the shifter bolts to and it bolts to the cross member) if it has any washers in it remove them and the shifter will tilt forward.
This is how the factory adjusted the tilt on your shifter.
In the pic #2 is the support and #6 are the washers that adjust the tilt of the shifter.
I see that is from a '73 assembly manual and I don't know if that is still true for the '79 but I'll take a look this weekend. So little really changed in these cars over the years. For some reason, I was thinking that the shifter was mounted to the tranny but it is entirely possible that I am wrong. It's been a few months since I was under the car.
