Let me start off first by saying that I am not a painter and in no way would ever want to be. The body of my car is in really good condition. I had already paid someone to fix a few places on the body that were busted and he also replaced the window frame and shot the car with primer to get it all one color. It still needs to be sanded and there is some spider webing in various places. I guess what I am asking is what is a reasonable price to expect to pay to get the car painted. I would love to have a show quality paint job but can't afford 7-10,000 for paint. I would just like to hear thaghts, suggestions, advice etc. Also does anyone have any recommendations for the job in the Charlotte N.C. area?
You're going to shell out about $3k for a job you can easily live with. For this price, you should expect the paint on the car to look like it did when it left the factory. You really want to ensure that the body is straight and all the spider-webbing fixed before you have the car painted. Any flaws in the sub-surface WILL show in the color coat.
If the car is driveable, take it to a body shop and tell them what you want. Get an estimate in writing that describes what work they're going to do and their guarantee policy. Take a look at cars they're working on and ask for references on their past work. It would be nice to look at one of their cars where the paint is a year or so old. As to where to get it painted, I would recommend a new car dealer's body shop as a starting point. From what I've seen, they do an above average job. If you can find a shop that specializes in Corvettes, then pay them a visit. Others on this forum have expressed good results with high-production shops like Maaco. It may be beyond your desires, but you shouldn't rule out giving it a shot yourself. I painted both of my cars by myself in my garage.
Thanks for the advice. By the time I get ready to paint it it will be driveable. I am however going to hold off putting the interior back in the car until after the car is finished. I have realy thaught about the whole do it yourself thing but that scares the he## out of me.
