I have pulled the trans out of my car twice. But my car was originally an automatic, so it has a removable crossmember which made dropping the trans easy.
But I'm going to help my buddy pull the 4 speed out of his car this week, and I'm assuming that he has a welded in crossmember. How do I get the trans out with the crossmember in the way?
Also, he can't go into any of the gears other than reverse. And it was difficult to shift before that. So I'm assuming that his synchros are shot. How difficult is it to rebuild a 4 speed? I've never opened up a trans before.
This is not all that hard to do, Just drain the oil, remove the driveshaft, all the linkage, the trans bracket. Remove the four bolts that bolt the trans to the bellhousing. Grab ahold of the trans and pull it out of the bellhousing straight back untill the input shaft is past the bellhousing. Drop the front of trans down then pull it forward to clear the support and it will be out. Also remove the speedometer cable. The shifter and shift bracket and trans bracket are your main obstacles.

Yup.....Just did the same thing myself.....Not to hard actually
They're not hard to rebuild... but you should buy the special wrench for removing/installing the bearing retaining nut. The shaft is tapered.... only comes out one way. Tap it the other way, and you destroy the case.
But how do I physically pull the trans out? Does it slide back over the crossmember then forwards and down towards the engine?

And what is the bearing retainer nut?
There is a nut on the front of the transmission that retains the bearing... it should be "staked" in position. Although it's not always required, you are supposed to replace this nut with a new one and "stake" it after you tighten it. The nut is skinny, and is hard to reach with a standard wrench due to interference.... thus the need for a large, skinny wrench. A left handed wrench.
Just pulled it out, the exhaust had an H-Pipe which prevented us from dropping the driveshaft all the way, but the trans just slid right over it, then down and forwards.
The U-Joints were in bad shape. The end caps came off and the needle bearings fell all over the place.
I don't think he's going to rebuild it, he'll probably just buy a rebuilt one.

I'd look into just having it rebuilt. I had my M21 done locally buy a guy who builds them out of his garage. He did it for a couple hundred bucks. Shifts smoooooth now.
