I installed a kill switch on my 79 tonight. My battery is a four post type with the two side post going to my amp and the top two to the rest of the car. The problem is when I turn the kill switch off (no power) my amp come alive (light comes on and you can hear it power up). When I turn the kill switch on the amp powers down and will only come on when you turn the stereo on-----like it should. I have the switch on the neg. side of the battery. I am starting to wonder if you can put a kill switch on a four post battery? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I think your problem comes from the control line from your stereo. When you use the battery disconnect on the negative side (earth) the control line then floats high (+12V) and switches the amp on. The amp is seeing both the +12V and the earth but the stereo is only seeing the +12V so everything from the stereo floats at +12V. The sense line does not draw enough current to drag the volts down to earth so the amp "sees" the +12V and switches on.
Change the disconnect switch to the +12V side and the problem should go away. Also, you may damage any computers in your car by switching the earth.
wow----I had to read your post a hundred time to try to understand what you were trying to explain. But in the end I took your advise and it works perfect. Thanks from a half a world apart.
