Default Driveshaft U-joint question

I think I have stock driveshaft and stock rear end in my 1973 Vette (TH400). I have now during winter rebuild another rear end which has different gearing in it. I do not know from what year and type of vette the another rear end is (might be originally from an manual one).

I heard that in some years/types of cars the rear end driveshaft yoke is different size - thus it might turn out that in need a conversion U joint (the other line of the X is around 1/3" longer than the other line). Maybe the manual and automatic cars have had different size of U Joint.

Do you know this? Where can you buy those conversion U joints from? Are they different or is there only one size available that should do my problem...

If you even know the part number that would be great help so I could order online...
And are they available with grease fitting or without(stronger)?

Not positive, but a 73 may have a 1310 series driveshaft (ujoints 3.500 across w/1.062 caps). Later C3's had 1330 series (3.625 across and 1.062 caps). Do a search for Spicer (it may be spicer.com) and see if they list a number for a 1310/1330. Any parts house should be able to get it.

I measured the new rear end that will go into my car soon and the space in the yoke for driveshaft u joint is around 3.215" across...

Sorry, my bad. I was going from memory of the 1310. A 1310 is NOT 3.500, it is 3.218 as you measured. The 1330 IS 3.625 w/1.062 caps and a 1350 is 3.625 w/1.187 caps.

Good timing.
I just pulled my differential on a 1968 4 speed, 327. The differential had been pulled and it had hd, bolted caps (from either a big block or an automatic car).
I was planning on changing the driveshaft U joint but wasn't sure which one it was. How do I tell what U joint I need?

This may help, I swapped the muncie 4 out for a 6sp in my 69. The original slip yoke was 1310 series. The new tranny slip yoke was for 1330 series, so I went to a driveshaft shop they ordered me conversion u-joint Part number [1-0134HD] and I went on using my original driveshaft.

Been there done that. They are available at almost any auto parts store for about the same price as a standard U-Joint. Isn't it wierd that they increased the size of the U-joint just as they eliminated the high horsepower engines!!

Must have been several independent departments delivering with almost independent timeline and priorisation based on feedback from field...not that uncommon also nowadays in large corporations

I don't have the conversion joints listed. I sell maybe 5 or 6 a yr. Not very common. 5-790 is the Spicer part number.
