Hey Im kind of new to this site. been reading for a while but this is my first post. i have a 81 vette and im gettin ready to pull the motor out and rebuild her to get a lil more power out of it. and i was woundering what kind of high rise mainifolds you guys were fitting under there? also what are some advantages of dual plans vs. single plans. thanks guys ne help to point me in the right direcetion.
I am going to run the Edl. rpm dual plane on my 81. Its tight but will work. I know some here run single plane intakes but they are usually thought of as a race intake and not ideal for the street. Supposedly they give up a little at low rpm.
Be careful their guys.........I have the EDL Performer it it barely went under the hood. Had to get the drop down air cleaner to make it work. Anything taller will not fit under a stock hood!!

NO!! But it also depends on what carb you are using because of it's height. In my case, The EB square bore 600 cfm, and the intake, caused me to use the 14" drop down air cleaner (3").
I couldn't find anything else to fit.
I'm sure if you squeezed down to a 2" cleaner you could make it work, but probably not the best thing for performance.
There is always options, but sometimes they don't work as well. To each is own!!
my 81 has a performer intake and edelbrock carb ,I had no problem with the stock or edelbrock 14 inch air cleaner.
How tall is it? Dayum....maybe by motor is sitting higher? I do know when I took the motor out it had a two piece motor mount, instead of the 1 piece I replaced it with. That alone could have been the difference. I'm pretty sure my motor had been yanked before. BUBBA!!!!!! That's another story.........
Tip: Here's how I checked my clearance. I put a piece of 2" styrofoam on top of the cleaner screw in thread (no cleaner on). Barely pushing it on. Then I shut the hood to see how far it dropped onto the thread. So, from there you can calculate how much clearance you have from top of thread, to bottom of hood. Not the most scientific way, but it works. Also be sure and check your thread length, most new ones they send are two long and will stab thru your hood when you shut it. I used my old thread from the carb I replaced.

in my 1980 I had a performer rpm holley 650, and drop style filter, it all fit. Later I changed to that edelbrock mesh style triangular shaped filter, (all open styly with no drop.) it fit just fine as well. The problem is the 5 inches infront of the carb as the hood angles down there. A single plan torquer intake fits well too. What helps the most is a intake with a angled carb flange, one that angles downwards towards the front of course.
I am running an Edelbrock preformer RPM and a Holley 750 with a slight drop base air claner and 3" element. Fits with plenty of room and that is with new motor mounts. I also removed the hood insulation and removed onew of the mounting pins for the insulation. But I have plenty of room. Also to answer your question the manifold type really depends on the motor and your combination. If you are going to use the stock heads you will be limited. You have to decide the kind of power you want and find the parts that will put you in that range.
