I just had a 2004r installed on my 80 vette. But now there seems to be a discrepency in the speedo. It seems to be about 15 off now. I know I'm going down the interstate about 75, but the speedo is only reading about 60. Has anyone else had this problem?
When the trans. is changed it's typical to need speedo gears.
The driven gear is at end of speedo cable in trans. as usual. The drive gear can be changed by dropping the pan & pulling the governer since it's on the governer.
Is it legal to go 75 in Florida?
Call your local Chevy parts dealer and tell them your tire size, rear end ratio and 200r4 and they can tell you which gear set you need. They might can tell you what is in there now so you don't have to buy both gears. It is easy to change the drive gear.....not so quick to change the gov. gear.
nope,it doesn't need it but I still had to plug the speedo cable into the transmission to prevent it from leaking... The speedo gear that is in it is wrong and it show about 140 mph when I'm actually going 120 mph
Thanks for the help guys. Can someone tell me what the stock rear end ratio for a 1980 vette is?
I believe 2.87 or 3.07, depending on who bought it. My '81 Auto has the 3.07 (according to a calculator and after looking in the owner's manual). With your original transmission, what RPM were you turning at 80mph? If it's ~3200 you have 3.07.
AS I recall, the count is 1000 revs per mile, for some reason that is an industry standard, only reason I can figger is something mechanical due to the magnetics of operation with that spinning magnet and steady readings on the indicator....it may be something really stilly like 1001 revs/mile....but that is a vague recollection,.....
What rear end gears would go good with my 2004r and 350 L82 engine? Also how hard is it to change out the rear end gears?
Thanks
My 79 has a 355 rear and a Bowtie tranny that has an OD with something like a .62:1 ratio. It feels like it lugs at anything below 55 MPH. Therefore I suggest a rear of at least 355 or 411.
I have the correct gear in mine. BTO asked what my diff was and tire size when I ordered the tranny.
I never use the speedo at the track. When I used to drive it on the street, the speedo bounced around so much at certain speeds, it was worthless. I just make sure I'm not passing people TOO fast.
Fortunately down here in FL, if you're not doing 85 on I75, the little old ladies in mini-vans will run you off the road!

I'm running 3:36's. They work fine on the street, but with that big OD in my 2004r, I'd have been better off staying with my 3.70's. I was just so tired of taching out at 3000 runnig 65 mph that I over compensated. I almost went with 3.08's
If you're looking for MPG, the 3.36's are ok. If you want some decent acceleration, go with 3.70's or higher. That OD will still be nice to cruise with.
