Hey every body i'm back form my vacation and now I have the ich to fix somthing that isn't broken.
what you all of you think about shift kits
I can't make up my mind which one I should put in my TH350 I think I have it narowed down to a stage II but which is better hurst or B&M and I don't know about drilling a hole in my tranny.
Is there any experience out there on this subject or other options that I may not know about.
Thank you :smash:
I don't know what "stage II" means, but I used B&M's $25 kit (http://users.erols.com/jerryp58/corvette/bnmkit.htm) in my TH350 with the HD/Towing option. I'm happy with the results, but if/when I do another kit, I'm going for the more aggressive option.
Like I said, I'm happy with the B&M kit, but a lot of people really like Trans-Go (even though they are a bit more complex).
Oh, while you're at it you may want to install an adjustable modulator (why do I always think of Marvin the Martian when I type or say that?). That's my next step with my transmission.
The modulator is just a screw-in into the side of the trans. It's adjustable in that it lets you adjust the 1-2 & 2-3 shift points. Now this is where I'm a little fuzzy (among other many other places) and I haven't gotten a good answer from the group yet, but I've read the shift is set at MPH increments by turning an adjustment screw on the modulator. I would think that I'd set the shift at RPM increments not MPH, but I'm guessing that if MPH is the case, I won't be able to set a shift point that would get me above red line on the tach (YES/NO other members?).
If you get a dual purpose shiftkit like B&M. I would just go for the performance option. Its a good positive shift. Its not distructive or anything. You dont have to drill your tranny. If you select the performance option you drill out one of the holes on the new seperator plate that comes in the kit. I think they throw a drill bit in there to.
A modulator Like a B&M will let you move your shift points up or down a few miles an hour.
Most of the time when you install a shift kit,it will make your car shift thru 1st,2nd and 3rd real fast like before you get across the intersection.
The modulater will let you put space between the shifts.
They work very good.
Find a vacuum line going from the engine to the trans and its hooked to the modulator.
Jack the car up with a drip pan under it and take out the holding strap bolt and remove the metel that is holding in the round modulator.
It will drip some trans fluid.
Grease up the o-ring on the new one and slip it back in,put screw and strap back on.
In the end of mod is a little screw you can screw in or out with a pocket screw driver.
IN for spaced shifts and OUT for quik shifts.
I would screw it in 1 1/2 turns.Dont go over 3 turns either way.
As for a shift kit,Hurst,B&M,Trans go all do the same thing.
Go with the name you like, and go for the street/strip setting.
You might think about a trans cooler like a long 2 row for street rods because they are easier to place somewhere.
