I just replaced the starter on my '81 with one of those mini starters (that are supposed to have enough torque to turn over a 12:1 CR motor). It starts my car, but it sounds like it is laboring. It is definately turning slower than the stock starter, sounds almost like the battery is low, but it is not. Is that normal with these? Does it get the power by gearing itself to turn slower? Thanks and God bless, Sensei

Yep, it gains torque thru a reduction gear- perfectly normal. However if it sounds like its laboring, you may want to check your ground as that's usually where current is lost.
Damn, I HATE the way those things sound! That grinding sound is almost enough to make me dislike my buddy's father's '70 Challenger.
I really don't care how my starter sounds. I care that it starts the car without heat-soaking like my old one. If the sound is a bit weird, I can cope with it for better performance.
I put a mini starter on my BB and it started fine, but when the car was hot it would not start. but once the car cooled down it would start. ever heard of this problem?
I have a 73 454 that been beefed up a bit, not original.

You would have been better off by using a HD stock starter and saving the money for GAS. But put a battery in with more cranking power and the problem should go away.

Go to a local starter shop or yard & BUY a "Permanent Magnet Starter" from a late model iron block GM V8 or V6 ... Delco makes some of em ... they have a "quiet" internal planetary gear reduction (not that noisy Mopar-type gear set), weigh under 10lbs, are very strong, are VERY heat resistant and RARELY screw up. Star has em for under $100 ... NEW ... 153T straight or 168T staggered ... 1-800-625-9454
*edit* Field coils get heat-soaked & become VERY inefficient ... the big old heavy C3 starters have field coils ... the newer permanent magnet starters do not have field coils.
