How many have disabled the egr. I use to have the famous BB in the connecting elbow, but have removed it (I seem to be removing all these "gimmicks" - like the Throttle Performance Enhancer). At WOT the egr shuts off, so no benefit gained there with it in place. At cruising, so what if a little exhaust gas is introduced. I'm cruising, and, it keeps the engine temp down, so that's a bennie. Anyway:
Well... I currently have my egr hooked up. I really don't want it though, simply because I think the lack of egr stuff really cleans up the look of the engine compartment and would make stuff easier to work on. But I'm worried that my county might eventually do smog tests, and then I'd be sol! I'm already missing my cat. It was gone when I bought the car so installing true duals was no dilema! :D I dunno what I'll end up doing about the egr... I'll guess I'll figure it out when I get ready to "upgrade" the manifold.
dusty,
I have never seen this enforced, but it is one the books in Texas:
Texas law prohibits any person from selling, offering for sale, leasing, or offering to lease any vehicle not equipped with all emission control systems or devices in good operable condition. Violators are subject to penalties under the Texas Clean Air Act of up to $25,000 per violation. Buyers are advised to have the vehicle checked for all required emission control devices prior to purchasing a new or used vehicle.
Tom, that's gotta be one of the most unenforced Texas laws going. I've lived in Texas for 12 years now, and in that time I've bought 4 used cars & trucks, all of which (including the vette) had their emissions equipment stripped out. The vette's got no cat, no egr, no air pump, no nothing, and gets through inspections just fine. Of course, when they get emissions testing going down here because Austin can't get its ozone under control, I'm going to be in trouble. Well, until 2003, anyway. :D
JB,
I agree, it probley is the most unenforced law on the books. But it is there and could bite someone. Say you have a car without the emission equipment and sell it to someone who lives in Houston (where they have emission testing). Then the car does not pass. Can they then come back on you to force you to replace the missing emission equipment (at whatever cost)? Just another thing to be concerned about with old cars. :D
I hadn't considered that. It's an odd problem--I doubt they'll ever be able to do anything in a general way about it except fail you on emissions, or half the old cars in Texas would be liable for $25K fines every time they're sold, but I could see it becoming an issue in a situation like that.
BTW, I'm still working on the guy I ran across down here with the red '73 sitting on flat tires in his driveway. He told me when I asked, "if I wanted to sell it, I'd put a sign on it," but I'm waving to him everytime I drive past, and he's waving back. I may join your registry yet!
we have the same law in California, it seems to apply mostly to Dealers, I've heard it being enforced against dealers anyway, but you are right, enforcement against private parties seems no-existant. However in CA. it is the responsibility of the seller to provide a current smog cert prior to selling a vehicle, so that kind of resolves that whole issue.
Good info on emissions laws guys... lots of stuff to think about. Ugh, I think I'll eventually take the egr off and hold onto it and the orig manifold in case they start sniffing, or I get ready to sell the car. (aka: no time soon)
My EGR is gone because the valve went and they wanted $60-$75 for a new one. Bought a EGR block off plate from JEG's. Works for me. If they initiate state wide testing in Florida again, I'll worry about it then.
