I am having the same "exact" problem, put on an Edelbrock #1406 600 cfm carb and I get the same things you have described, to the letter. The Tech at Edelbrock suggested pink (heavier) springs & 1 size bigger rods. These go under two caps right on top of the carb, so it's a very simple swap. It helped alot. I live in Wi and it was worse when it was cold out. When it warmed up or ran for awile, the smoke went away. I am still not real happy with the carb...........

look down in the carb when it's running, if you see gas dripping you've got dirt in the needle and seat, holley's are known to do this. If it happened, drain all the gas out of the carb and crank the motor, usually the rush of gas will clear it out.

Order the carb jet/rod kit from summit or jegs.......you can get the instructions directly from the Eldelbrock website. Very simple to do......rods take about 5 minutes to change, jets take a little longer cause you have to take the top body of the carb off.

I personally think it's to much carb for a stock 81..........and that's from personal experience.
