i went to set the timing on my vette the shop manual said to set it to 6 btdc. so i unplugged the vacum hose and plugged it the hose. and set timing to 6 btdc. and car didnt want to run after that.so i moved it to 6 atdc and it ran better. the car had work before i bought it 4 yrs ago i know it has a comp cam but nothing else. how can i set the timing on this.and how do i know if the vacume advance is working..also when the car gets hot its hard to start????????
make sure the harmonic balancer did not slip..I had the same problem and found it slipped 90deg.. take out number 1 plug and turn the engine by hand to get # 1 piston to top dead center on compression stroke..look at the distributer and the rotor should be pointing to #1 plug. Look at the timing mark it should be right around 0 deg or where the hole in the plate is.. if its a inch or more it probably slipped..change it
If you're getting screwy timing readings like this the ring on the ballencer may have slipped. Bring #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and make sure the mark on the ballencer is pointing at "0" on the timing tab. This engine should run great at 12 degrees BTDC (with vacuum advance disconected). If you don't have to worry about emisions hook the vacuum advance up to manifold vacuum.
how do i turn the engine by hand? and how do i know when the #1 piston is at tdc? do i need to remove the valve cover?? sorry i have never done this on an engine. thank you
