I've been looking over this rack install project....and for some reason, it doesn't appear I can attach the damned thing without dropping the gas tank, even tho the last post, I asked if the tank needed dropping and was told it wasn't necessary....tho, I'll be damned if I can figure out how one WOULD install it any other way...the nuts have to be in the back of the cockpit or near the rear bumper joint, but isn't long enuf to clear both front and back, at least it doesn't measure out that way....I don't think
So, before I start dropping a drill bit into the body I was wondering if anybody has a link to a "how to install corvette luggage racks" description, or if one could be emailed to me...TIA
I am anxious to learn this also. I am stripping my car and I found eight covered holes where mine had a rack. I am planning on reinstalling it. I cant see either how not to have to drop the gas tank. Its not a big deal to drop the tank but If i dont have to do it good.
Well...I'd love to have the rack on....but will not drop the tank, I've opened more "cans of worms" on this car then I care to admit...if it turns out I have to....that will be the end of that project...let's hope somebody chimes in...
Its really not a bad job to drop the tank if its empty. What sucks I just had mine out a few weeks ago to replace to rubber lines. Like you said soon someone will be getting out of bed to chime in on this thread.
You do not have to drop the tank to install the rack. If you use the proper installation parts, there will be 6 or 8 rubber well nuts for the install. Place the rack on the rear deck, mark the holes thru the rack. drill 1/2 inch holes thru the deck. then insert well nuts into the dack and assemble parts, or assemble all of the parts and then insert them into the holes and tighten. I will try to get a copy of the installation on here, but if you pm me with a fax no. I can fax a copy on Monday.
Those JAck Nuts are metal, but the concept is the same. I like to fill the well nuts with grease before installing the screws to hold down the rack. This helps prevent corrosion from preventing future removal.
i re-installed mine on my 75,luckily i bought the parts kit before i started, the kit was self explanitory.much like a rubber boat plug, tighten it up and thats it.
