I'm not sure what to say.
I did not know that you could buy a Corvette Trim Tag on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/68-69...QQcmdZViewItem
I querried "trim" for my 68 quarter and came up with this on the page.
Doesn't the vin # tie out with the trim tag on the build order from GM?
I guess I have been a little naive. I suppose a guy could make his car any color/interior combo he wanted with the right trim tag.
Seems a little under handed to me.
Oh well.
PS Still looking for 68 Vert Quarter Trim

No. Nothing on the trim tag equates directly to the VIN. The trim tag shows only the date the tag was attached to the body and the original exterior paint and interior colors. Technically, the Corvette in question did not have a VIN at the time the trim tag was attached. The VIN tag was not installed until further along on the production line. One can compare the time/build date with the consecutive unit number of the VIN and determine whether the two appear to be legitimate. As an example, a time/build code shows the car was assembled on September 1. That's the second month of production so the consecutive unit number show be low. If the VIN reads 16660 indicating the 16,660th Corvette assembled that model year, its reasonable to suspect the tag has been swapped.

YEP... that is why numbers matching is subjective... I would rather have a well build restoration than a suspect numbers matching... Hell, even documentation can be false anymore...buyer beware.
Also, isn't there aftermarket trim tags already out there?
Interesting. The guy that sold me my '69 L46 was heavily involved in the corvette hobby and well known to the local corvette clubs in the city I formerly lived in. He also would buy trim tags. I never quite understood WHY.
NOTE: The trim tag on my L46 is shiny new... But the VIN tag on the windshield pillar is original and the VIN matches the stamping on the block (which also looks very old). So, he may have swapped the trim tag but not sure why unless it was missing or damaged. The car's current color does not match the Riverside Gold exterior color code on the trim tag (it was painted mille miglia red over 10 years ago).
