I now have a 1968 Corvette, which a prior owner had painted kelly green. While it is a very distinctive color and looks fine, I want to have it painted its original color. The paint code appears to be "983". 1. Does anyone know what this color would be? 2. If not, does anyone know where I could find out?
From the "Corvette Black Book" by Mike Antonick (nice hand book size reference), paint code 983 is "British Green" and 4,779 of the 28,566 1968 Corvettes were painted that color. It also looks like you should have a black interior with this color option.
Thank you for the help, and for the picture. Yes, it does have a black interior. You have a great looking car-- hope that someday mine looks half that good (it is going to be somewhat of a project!).
Welcome from another '68! The "orphan" year! Good luck with your car. You may want to enter the 1968 Corvette Registry at http://www.vettefinders.com/68registry/
Congratulations on the '68!!!! Cruise and enjoy! Original paint codes for '68 British Green are 4949-L for Dupont, A-2011 for Rinshed-Mason, and 43795 for Ditzler. All of these are acrylic lacquers. Your automotive paint supplier should be able to take those codes and show you what British Racing Green looks like.
I forgot to add this to my post and I haven't heard of anyone doing it for a little while, but if you call 800-222-1020 (Chevrolet) and give them your VIN (they may not even ask for that) you used to receive a FREE specifications package for your specific year car. It is a pretty comprehensive source of information (at least I thought so for my '77 package) and, oh yeah, IT'S FREE
