Default Parking (Emergency) brake cable spring ?

I took the old cables (what was left of them) off a couple of months ago and am now installing a new parking brake set. Near the end of each cable (where the end hooks into the rear of the hub) there is a spring. What I need to know is, does that spring go just before or just after the plastic guide.

Put another way, does the spring belong on the cable where it attaches to the rear of the hub, or does spring go between the last cable mount and the plastic guide?

I can't get a clean look in the pics I have and the AIM isn't any help.

Thanks for any help,

kdlp

The spring fits between the plastic guide and where it attaches to the cable. Put the ball end in through the hook. Back up the spring tothe other side of that hook, and then compress it before the white plastic guide.

I found a pic for you. Check out "MAINEVETTE" picture site.

He's got a great pic on the Jan 29 section. Good view looking down from the top - exactly what you're looking for

Plus LOTS of great other pics

Thanks for the link... as you said, that pic sums it up.

That's where I was headed but wanted to be sure before I crimped it.

Again, thanks,

I never crimped mine. Are you sure it is supposed to be crimped? I thought it was just tension that held it in.

Anyone?

I don't believe the parking brake lever is supposed to be crimped tight to the cable. When I did my install I thought the cable fit a little too loosely in the lever (I didn't trust that the cable would stay put) so I crimped mine just a little to tighten things up. I made sure to leave the bracket loose enough so that the cable could still move freely in the bracket. It didn't take much.

Sorry to take so long to respond on the "crimping" thing.

I'd read a thread (which I now can't find which makes me think it might have been a different forum) where a guy had trouble keeping that spring in place and his solution was to crimp the end to the fitting that holds the plastic band. As I recall, the spring was pushing through the plastic guide fitting which took tension off the cable.

In any case, he wasn't talking about the parking brake lever, but the fitting that holds the plastic guide. Haven't installed mine yet, but I'm thinking now that his fitting must have been distorted... or perhaps the plastic guide wasn't in the fitting?

Hope to get out this afternoon and do the hookup.... uneventfully....
