Default engine hardware identification

I need to determine the correct socket for the type of bolts/studs used on my valve covers so they can be removed for a gasket replacement. They look to be a little larger than 3/8" in diameter with small teeth all around the edges of the bolt. I don't have a socket in my set that fits it. Is this some kind of speciality fastener?
