whats the deal with the stock shifter on an 82 with the 700r4. the shifter only had 4th, 3rd, and 2nd gear. why cant i get to 1st gear? is that the way chevy made it on purpose. why? is there another shifter i can put in there that will fit in the factory console for a 4sd auto.
First gear in the 700R4 is really low, it shifts into 2nd really fast, so they left off first on the shifter to prevent people from burning everything up by not shifting into second soon enough. You can change the shift points in the trans if you want. I had mine rebuilt and it now shifts into 2nd at 5500rpms at WOT Stock, I think was around 4000rpm. I don't think having a manual 1st to 2nd shift is worth it.

I searched both user name and 82 shifter and couldnt find where to grind. I am 1/2 way through my 700 replacement and would like to be able to hold first gear for a change.
I don't know how to link you to it, so here is the best I can do.
1. Do a search for 700r4 shifter
2. Thread title is "700r4 guru's" started by "rastadr".
3. If someone would like to educate me on how to link him to threads I would be grateful.
I have the same issue as you, and I don't know if filing off the tab will help us. It may require some cable adjustments and after doing all that you may not have od. Good luck and keep me posted because I am about a week away from finishing up my trans. swap.

Mooneyd has a good point. I posted a similar question about six months ago and was told to file the shifter plate or buy a plate already done. I have the post at home....will get it to you when I get there. Larry
