I posted this over in C2 and I am building a 67 427/435 coupe. Since this is a 427 and I am running a new Lakewood bellhousing, I figured I would try here in C3 for some advice and see if anyone here has has a similiar experience. I am guessing there are several C3'ers here with a big block and possibly a Lakewood shield.
This was my question:
Has anyone installed a Lakewood shield and had an issue with getting a standard GM starter to fit?
We were wrestling with the starter last night, and it doesnt' seem to have enough clearance on the block plate hole, and the actual starter notch on the shield itself.
I just installed the Lakewood SFI #15000 scatter shield and block protector. I'm using a 168 tooth 22 pound billet steel fly wheel and Pro Torq gear reduction starter.
The gear reduction starter doesn't have the gear snout like a stock starter.
I didn't have any issues with the factory 11" flywheel, factory starter, and Lakewood w/ blockplate. Dropped right in. I do believe there is a knockout on the blockplate that needs to be removed. It was in the instructions.
