I want to know if anyone has any suggestions for a side pipe muffler for hooker side pipes that has max flow but has some sound controll. I have a 383 stroker and it needs to have max flow, I put on the muflers that were advertized with them, the loud ones, but they are too restrictive, they had glass packs in them.
I ended up removing the glass pack portion of the muffler and now there is basically nothing restricting flow, but it is way to loud for a daily driver,
Can you supply links or at least a name of some mufflers I can get that will work for my sittuation? anyone have this combo of a 383 stroker and hooker side pipes? and what mufflers you have? Thanks.
I just took out my Hooker reverse flow mufflers and replaced them with the new Hooker Max Flow mufflers and man what a world of difference. I'm just running a stock L46 motor and the performance difference was night and day. They also sound great, nice and deep but not toooo loud. Good luck.
Also just got the maxflows for my 454 stroker and the sound is more like the sixties all over again. Not too loud, plenty of power and sounds like a stroker should. If you're looking for that classic sound, I'd vote for the maxflows.
Cool69Shark, let me rephrase one of the above comments. You will not hear any complaints about the baffles by anyone who cares about Maximum horsepower, which you obviously do. I am one who have dyno proven results on the baffles and nothing has proven more effective other than open pipe which isn't much difference on most engines. PM me if you want any more info on them. This is about the 10th time I have felt I needed to interject because of a snide comment from the above poster because he didn't like the sound of the baffles and probably lost a couple of bucks because he then sold them. On my motor they sound great (uncapped) and at the 615 horsepower level, only lost 12 horsepower.
I put the spiral baffles in my sidepipes and they were just a little too loud for my taste. I installed the "vortex" baffle ahead of the spiral baffles and they made it noticably less loud. I've only run the engine on a stand so far; am working to get it installed into car asap. It may be less loud in the car, dunno. . .
P.S. The technology used by dynatech is not new, it's been used to quieten control valves in industry for years. They obviously add some pressure drop, but I've not seen any numbers.
Thanks for the advice guys, my mechanic has recomended a muffler that he saw at a show, so it is brad new, and it has a spiral design but is different than the screw spiral look, I will get some pics of it and post it on here later today. It is going to take some time for it to get here though, I think they are back ordered.

S489,
I am looking at the spiral baffles also. What diameter do you have there? How do the mount? Do they bolt on or need welded? I have a stock-type side exhaust on my 71.

These side pipes are 4" I believe. The spiral baffles bolt in and come with SS hardware and instructions. I would check the diameter of your pipes and give vendor a call. I'm pretty sure they have several sizes.
Note in the top pic at the [left] end of the baffle is a "flange"; notice that it sort of lines up with a hole in the tube. A cap screw and nut at each end like this holds it in place. You have to drill the two holes in each tube. The screws are not as hard as it first appears to get to.
I assure you Mr. Yellow 72 I am not cranky. Just want to make sure the subjective impressions are separated from the facts. By your original post it was not clear whether your implication was to dispute horsepower claims or another reason. I wouldn't want Cool69 to get the wrong impression as I am sure you wouldn't, right?
By saying "wanna bet", you did not really give anyone any useful information, however it may create an impression which may or not be true.

Agreed, but I would contend that the statement " you won't find a bad word about them " is also misleading. As to imply that everyone who has owned or heard them has been giddy with satifaction. Which we all know is not factual.
So I will continue to voice my opinion on whatever topic I feel qualified. Feel free to interject anytime...we never get tired of reading about the DYNO results
I made a set of inserts from chambered mufflers from this company. They now sell them as inserts. I like to sound, the exhust flow is much better and not too loud for me.
