Okay, I admit we've been putting this off by "finding" fun mechanical stuff to do, but we finally decided to get serious about stripping the paint off our 72 coupe before winter. For the most part, this has been the usual tedious grind ending up at the "bare" gray fiberglass.
But now we've run into something weird. On the rear quarterpanels, from the wheel wells back, where the outward swell "peaks" (I hope this makes sense), there is what looks like Bondo (it's pink, and it flakes off when we're scraping the dissolved paint off) on the car. Not surprising, except that it seems to be UNDER the original primer and paint. We've "discovered" a few other areas where the "aftermarket" body work is obvious (one of the reasons we're redoing the body), but this one is strange. It's the same way on both sides.
Did Chevy do bodywork on Vettes before painting them? On both sides, it looks like this is on there to build up that bulge. Anybody ever seen something like this before?
According to a buddy that worked in the St. Louis plant in the early 70's, it was not at all uncommon to use a "hot" mix of filler on new bodies. He identified several factory fills on my car. There is also a pink stripe where the seams are bonded.
Sorry about the typing, I was holding an icecream bar in one hand. :D
Is there a possiblilty that your car has been bumped in the back hard enough for the rear of the bonding strips to split/crack? If it has been rear-ended at some point that could be an explaination. Has the rear tail light panel been replaced? If it has then this is a possibility. If not, maybe the rear of the seams were showing through, and they were filled when doing a repaint. It really is just a best guess unless you can track down some history on your car.
I had my Vette media blasted earlier this spring and was first time for paint to be taken all the way down to the bare fiberglas. We found the same thing. About three inches down from top of fenders all around the car. Body man told me this was where the factory seams in the body was at. Filler down at the factory before primer. Hope that this is correct and helps you out.
P.S. I have some pics of this but have not loaded them on the link below in my signature. Will try to load them later.
