Default Fusable Links

A long long time ago, like more than 20 years ago I had a situation where a fusable link on my 69 Stingray that was in the cable leading to the starter blew out. Yes, after finally figuring out what went wrong I simply removed the link, which looked about as big a a penny, and soldered the cable ends together.

Has anyone else had a fusable link blow? Where can these links be purchased? Hey, It has worked okay all of these years, however, I would rather not press my luck any further.

Autozone, Advance, Pepboys etc., all of those places sell a fuse with a weather tight cover you can use in place of the fuseable link. Just solder it in place of the link.

I had one blow recently on another vehicle. Looked like a smoke bomb going off.

I've seen the regulation fusible links for sale at most of these places too.

I just built an 8 gauge alternator charge wire that goes from the alternator output terminal to the positive terminal on the starter. I added a 9" section of 12 gauge fusible link to the end that connects to the positive terminal on the starter. I purchased the coil of fusible link at Napa. The rule for fusible link is 4 gauges smaller than the wire it is protecting. e.g. 8 gauge wire/12 gauge fusible link, 10 gauge wire/14 gauge fusible link. etc. The 9" spec is what I had read somwhere as the spec OEMs use. or you could just measure the length of the existing fusible link and do that. The cylinderical plastic piece usually seen on the fusible link wire , most people confuse as the actual fused link however it is just an identifier, so you don't need that for the protection.
